"We Are What We Eat:” Food and National Identity in American History

Eating and drinking are among the most mundane yet essential activities that human beings undertake. However, as well as being vital to sustaining life, the types of food we consume, the way we prepare it and the social settings in which we enjoy it, are more than just functional - they speak to the social, cultural and political beliefs and structures of the times we live in. Dr. Tim Boyd will use examples from the Jacksonian era and other periods of U.S. history to highlight the ways in which the foods that Americans have served and eaten over the centuries have defined and reflected the nation's development and identity. 

Dr. Tim Boyd is the Associate Head of School & Academic Dean at Montgomery Bell Academy (MBA). He grew up in London and came to Tennessee in 2002 to pursue a Ph.D. in History at Vanderbilt University. His book on the political culture of post-World War II Georgia was published by the University of Florida Press in 2012. Since completing his Ph.D., he has taught American and European history at Vanderbilt and at MBA. He and his wife live in Nashville and have two daughters. 

The History Uncorked series offers an evening of wine, wisdom and words. Offered in partnership with Natchez Hills Winery, each program focuses on a particular topic, followed by a lively conversation in a casual setting.

Doors open at 6 p.m. for guests to gather, with the presentation starting at 6:30 p.m. Tickets include one glass of wine from Natchez Hills.

A portion of all sales will support the Andrew Jackson Foundation’s mission to preserve the home place of Andrew Jackson, create learning opportunities and inspire informed citizenship.
